To help balance the Parking Services budget, the Cal Poly University Police Department (UPD) is considering charging for on-campus parking on the weekends, according to UPD Chief George Hughes.

So far, Hughes said, the idea has not gone beyond the department conversations.

“It’s completely hypothetical at this time,” he said.

According to Hughes, the department has been collaborating on different ideas to balance the budget, including installing credit card parking meters. But all the ideas are just conversation topics as of now.

If the idea were to go beyond conversations, it would have to be introduced to groups such as Associated Students, Inc., staff and faculty. If it reached this point, students would be informed about the proposal before it becomes a reality, Hughes said.

According to UPD associate director Cindy Campbell, other California State University campuses charge for weekend parking.
