Food science sophomore Jena Lee spent $160 on application fees, only to be rejected by three property management companies and lose almost 20 houses to other applicants. 

“We spent hundreds of dollars on housing applications, and we’ve reached out to countless leasing offices,” Lee said. “We came back with zero.”

A survey distributed by Mustang News on Jan. 25 asked Cal Poly students to rate their risk level associated with activities college students typically engage in like attending gatherings, going out to eat or going for a walk. Mustang News sent the survey to 12 randomly-selected general education classes with at least 60 enrolled students.

When psychology freshman Peyton Varner was 11 years old, she couldn’t comprehend that the unsheltered individuals she saw living on the street wouldn’t receive any Christmas presents. That year, she asked Santa Claus only for items that she could give to those living on the street, and this led Varner to take the first steps toward establishing Pea’s Blessing Bags.

Former President Donald Trump was acquitted by the Senate for inciting an insurrection at the Capitol on Feb. 13. Trump became the fourth presidential impeachment trial in the history of the United States and the second impeachment trial involving him. Trump is the only president in American history to be impeached twice in one term.

President Joe Biden was inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States on Jan. 20 in Washington D.C. Within the first week of his presidency, President Biden signed several executive orders including eliminating private prisons, reversing the 2018 transgender military ban, providing economic relief related to the pandemic, and reversed the Muslim ban. He has also taken key steps by rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization (WHO).

On Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, an insurrectionist mob urged by President Trump stormed the Capitol building. Five people died. 

The days following the insurrection, representatives of both parties called for action against the president. Some, like Illinois Rep. Kinzinger, called for the 25th amendment, while Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged to pursue impeachment.
