Cal Poly Women’s Tennis announced its full 2025 spring schedule, featuring 13 home matches and a competitive slate of 22 dual matches as they look to defend their Big West Championship.
Highlights of the schedule include a seven-match homestand, nine conference matchups, and battles against three teams that participated in the 2024 NCAA Tournament: Arizona, Grand Canyon and Sacramento State.
Under the leadership of third-year head coach Ellie Edles Williams, the Mustangs aim to build on the momentum of their historic 2024 season.
Last year, Cal Poly was crowned Big West Champions, the second in program history and first since 2003. That victory secured the Mustangs their third-ever NCAA Championships appearance and first since 2011.
Season Kickoff in Berkeley
The 2025 campaign begins with the annual Cal Winter Invite in Berkeley from Jan. 10-12 at the Hellman Tennis Complex, allowing the Mustangs to tune up before dual play.
Last season, current senior Eliza Bates and senior Romane Mosse had a great time at the Cal Winter Invite, capturing the doubles championship.
On Jan. 19, the team heads to Tucson, Arizona, for a neutral-site clash with Northern Arizona, followed by a challenging match against Arizona on Jan. 20. The Wildcats, ranked No. 39 in the nation last season, reached the 2024 NCAA Tournament First Round.
Home Opener in front of the new Comerford Pavillion
Cal Poly will officially inaugurate the dual portion of its season at the newly upgraded Comerford Pavilion at the Ronca Tennis Center on Jan. 24, hosting Montana State in their 2025 home opener.
This marks the first meeting between the two programs in 26 years. The Bobcats were originally scheduled to visit last season, but the match was canceled due to poor weather.
The Mustangs round out their opening weekend at home against Santa Clara on Jan. 26, and Cal Poly currently holds a five-match win streak over Santa Clara dating back to 2019.
Extended Homestand
A seven-match homestand from late January to late February sets the stage for the Mustangs to build early-season momentum.
The Washington State Cougars visit on Feb. 7, followed by the Fresno State Bulldogs on Feb. 9.
The Mustangs welcomed the Bulldogs to their inaugural Cal Poly Invitational in the fall and had great success competing.
San Jose State Spartans visit on Feb. 16. The stretch also includes a Feb. 21 matchup against Gonzaga.
A Feb. 23 showdown with Grand Canyon, the reigning Western Athletic Conference champions, is in store for the Mustangs.
Grand Canyon reached the NCAA Tournament in 2024, finishing the season ranked No. 57 nationally. Last year, the Mustangs fell to the Antelopes 4-0 in Phoenix, making this year’s rematch highly anticipated.
Big West and Road Challenges
Cal Poly hits the road for the first time in over a month on Feb. 28, traveling to Sacramento State, the defending Big Sky champions.
The Mustangs head to UC Davis on March 1 to open Big West play. A four-match road stretch continues with visits to UC Riverside (March 7) and Long Beach State (March 8).
The Mustangs return home on March 10 to host Loyola Marymount, followed by their Big West home opener against CSUN on March 16.
On March 21, Cal Poly welcomes Columbia to San Luis Obispo for the first time. Columbia ended last season ranked No. 45 in the ITA poll, promising a competitive nonconference test.
Cal Poly takes their season to O’ahu for two matches in late March, facing Division II powerhouse Hawai’i Pacific on March 25 before a key Big West contest against Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors on March 26.
Final Home Matches and Blue-Green Rivalry
The Mustangs conclude their home schedule with four straight Big West matches: UC San Diego Tritons on April 4, Cal State Fullerton Titans on April 12, and UC Irvine Anteaters on April 13.
Last season, Cal Poly defeated Fullerton 4-3 in a thrilling Big West Championship final to secure the conference crown.
The regular season concludes on April 19 with a trip to rival UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.
Cal Poly’s victory over the top-seeded Gauchos in the 2024 Big West semifinals set the stage for their championship triumph, adding another chapter to this storied rivalry.
Big West Playoffs
The 2025 Big West Championships are set to take place April 24-27 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, the same venue where the Mustangs claimed victory last year.
There will be a slight adjustment to the previous format; UC San Diego is now eligible for postseason competition.
The top two seeds in the Big West regular season will earn a significant advantage, receiving a double bye and advancing directly to the semifinals, needing only two wins to become Big West Champions.
The champion of this 10-team tournament will secure the Big West’s automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Tournament, which kicks off on May 2-3.
