Cal Poly being an active campus is not new. The multi-level gym is often crowded, and a plethora of natural landscapes provide plenty of outdoor activities for students. The positive promotion of exercise and fitness is great, but at what point does our school’s fitness obsession pose a threat to student’s relationships with their bodies?

It’s okay if you don’t get that summer internship
Life experiences, like traveling and meeting new people from diverse backgrounds, hold value that cannot be quantified by the black ink on a resume.
Arguing with debate booths is a waste of time
Debate-style political booths are structured to be as unbalanced as possible and put you at as much of a disadvantage as they can. There is only one way to “win” in these debates: to not pick up the mic at all.
Activism at Cal Poly exists: it’s students’ responsibility to sustain it
By being actively involved at Cal Poly, students learn that they are capable of making significant impacts on policy or public opinion. This sense of autonomy and ability to self-advocate is extremely important to gain early on, as it promotes a future of taking action instead of settling for complacency.
How casual can your relationship with ChatGPT really be?
In February 2025, the Cal State system signed a $17 million contract with OpenAI that granted Cal State students, faculty and staff free access to ChatGPT Edu through July 2026. This AI initiative has been met with mixed reactions. Aside from ethical concerns with cheating, it raises a watershed of environmental and philosophical dilemmas.
The Cal State system has an enrollment problem
This distinction reveals a growing divide within the Cal State system. While imperfect, SB 640 represents a necessary adjustment to a system that can no longer rely on uniform admissions policies to serve campuses with vastly different capacities. Some campuses are working to attract students to stay stable, while others continue to turn away qualified applicants.
Review: Morning on the Green was a clever and exciting replacement to mayhem on the streets
My 3 a.m. alarm buzzed on my phone, and I jolted awake to the sound of an Irish jig and my roommates preparing drinks in the kitchen. Though I despise being woken up early, I had to persevere for my final St. Fratty’s day at Cal Poly.
I can confidently say it was totally worth it, because Cal Poly crushed it for this year’s 4:45 a.m. Morning on the Green concert at the Lower Sports Complex on Saturday the 14. In my four years of Fratty’s at Cal Poly, this has been one of the best days. I think a lot of us that had experienced the craze and thrill of the annual block party were grieving it, and needed something that could stand up to the sheer number of students the block party brought.
St. Fratty’s survival guide: For WOWies & people who live under a rock
The Manure is a satire column created to find the humor in the daily life of Cal Poly students. If you’re looking for news, this is not it. If you’re looking for sports, this is kind of it, because we’re having a ball. Malia Mundy is a journalism junior and a satire columnist for Mustang […]
The SLOw night life: What to do after the party gets rolled early
Yes, it’s a bummer when the party gets rolled just as it gets going. Still, after some experience, I’ve learned that mourning a 9 p.m. shutdown is pointless. Instead, here are some tried-and-true alternatives for salvaging your weekend.
Block the Flock: Put our community’s freedom and privacy first
Flock camera systems might be intended to protect our safety, but they are putting us at risk. They enable enhanced surveillance that can be used to target Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo students, families and visitors. Even just partnering with a company like Flock enables the targeting of similar communities across the country.
I did ‘Lose my Breath’ watching Illuminate this year
It’s rare to see jazz, hiphop, Chinese lion dance, Mexican folk dance and ballroom all on the same stage within the span of a single show. Cal Poly students, families and community members were lucky to experience exactly that at Illuminate this past Saturday.
