Daschle Lamer the third Mustang to fall short in overtime of title match

No. 3 seed 184-pounder Daschle Lamer came up just short in overtime, losing 8-5 to No 4. seed Timothy McDonnell in the 184 pound title match.
Lamer was seconds away from a Pac-12 title, before a McDonnell takedown and Lamer riding time point sent the match to overtime where he couldn’t land the takedown needed to win.
It was the third time today that a Cal Poly wrestler went to overtime and lost in a title match.
Lamer, a redshirt freshman, was the only freshman in the lineup for the Mustangs this year and will take second place at his weight.
It was a tough homecoming for the Lamer trio, who grew up in Corvallis, Oregon. Chance Lamer will be the only one of the three to advance to the NCAA Tournament later this month.
Daschle’s bout was the final title shot for the Mustangs, who will come away with Trevor Tinkers dominant win at 285 pounds.
Wick loses in overtime of 165 pound title match

At 165 pounds, No. 2 seed Luka Wick fell just short in an overtime 4-1 decision loss to No. 1 seed Joseph Bianchi.
It was the second straight Cal Poly wrestler to go into overtime with a 1-1 tie, and just like Zeth Romney, Wick was unable to secure the takedown needed to win the title.
Taking second at 165 pounds is still a major milestone for Wick, who missed all of last season due to injuries.
Just 184-pounder Daschle Lamer remains with a shot at a second title for Cal Poly.
Romney falls just shy of 133 pound title in overtime loss

In an overtime thriller, No. 2 seed Zeth Romney came up just short of his first career Pac-12 title, losing in overtime to No. 1 seed Nasir Bailey.
The score was even at 1-1 at the end of the third period, with each wrestler landing one escape apiece heading into overtime.
This was the first time Romney has reached the title match, but he is still seeking the decisive victory to push him to the top.
Last year, Romney took third at his first ever Pac-12 Championships and made his first ever NCAA berth.
Romney’s season isn’t over, as he already secured a qualification to this year’s NCAA Championships with his semifinal win earlier in the day.
Holeman falls in 125 pound title match, will have a shot at second

No. 1 seed 125-pounder Koda Holeman fell in his title match Thursday evening, losing by 11-2 major decision to Maximo Rentaria.
It was their second time sharing the mat this season, and the result evened their season series at 1-1
Holeman will still have a shot at a trip to NCAAs later this month, if he wins the second place match slated for later in Thursday against No. 3 seed Richie Sandoval.
Breaking: Tinker wins 285 pound Pac-12 title

No. 2 seed heavyweight Trevor Tinker’s won his first career Pac-12 title with a 8-0 major decision victory over No. 1 seed Jake Andrews.
It is the second 285-pound title in program history, and the first since 1993.
The redshirt junior’s streak of dominance continues, as with the win marks his 12th straight victory.
He was at his best in Pac-12 Championship competition, not allowing a single point across the semifinal and title matches.
He still holds another year of eligibility, where he could defend his title in a final season.
The Mustangs have four more shots at titles, starting with Koda Holeman at 125 pounds.
Cash Stewart wins third place 174 pound match

No. 3 seed 174-pounder Cash Stewart was strong in his second match of the tournament, winning by 14-2 major decision against No. 4 seed Chris Neal.
It was the redshirt sophomore’s first Pac-12 Championships, a spot he earned in a wrestle-off at practice back in San Luis Obispo earlier this week.
This year was also his first at 174 pound, which he moved up to from 165 midway through the year after Adam Kemp’s departure from the squad.
No. 4 seed 197-pounder Cole Jackson will be the final Mustang in third place bouts.
He also secured the starting nod with his performance in wrestle-offs.
Legend Lamer takes third place at 157 pounds

Not long after Chance Lamer won his third place match, 157-pounder Legend Lamer took the mat and was similarly dominant, securing a 17-1 technical fall against No. 4 Jose Farias.
Lamer, the No. 2 seed, earns third at his weight with the win.
It’s a disappointing finish for Lamer, who came into his semifinal match as an underdog against No. 26 CJ Hamblin, where he came up short.
With the eldest two Lamers both taking third, it will be up to redshirt freshman Daschle to take home a conference title for the family in the 184 pound final.
Chance Lamer clinches NCAA bid in 3rd place match win

Coming off an upset loss in the 149 pound semifinals, No. 2 seed Chance Lamer left the locker room looking rejuvenated, winning by 19-4 technical fall win in his third place match over No. 4 seed Brock Rogers.
The 149 pound weight class has three automatic NCAA qualifiers, so the win secures his spot in the tournament in Philadelphia later this month.
Even after today Lamer has only has only lost two times this season.
The Mustangs still have three more wrestlers to go in third place matches, including Legend Lamer at 157
Tinker becomes fifth and final wrestler to win in semifinals

No. 2 seed heavyweight Trevor Tinker wrapped up semifinal matches in dramatic fashion, winning an 11-0 major decision over Oregon State No. 3 Brett Mower.
The redshirt junior has made a complete turnaround after enduring a midseason slump.
This win was Tinker’s 11th straight victory, and with it he moves on to the final round.
Cal Poly will be well represented in the finals, as five different wrestlers won their semifinal matches.
They will have a shot at outdoing last year’s performance, where 174-pounder Adam Kemp was the only Mustang to take home a Pac-12 championship.
The team currently sits at third place will 56 total points, but are not far behind Little Rock (69.5) and Oregon State (61).
Daschle Lamer wins by major decision, fourth Mustang to make title round

At 184 pounds, No. 3 Dashle Lamer won by 11-2 major decision over No. 2 Gerrit Nijenhuis.
The two had faced off in the Mustangs’ final dual meet of the season on Feb. 23, where Nijenhuis landed a pin in a tightly contested match.
Lamer turned the tides completely, controlling the match all the way through.
He is the third Lamer brother of the day, but the first to advance after both Chance and Legend were eliminated in their semifinal matches.
Cash Stewart loses close match at 174 pounds

At 174 pounds, No. 3 seed Cash Stewart fell to No. 2 seed Murphy Menke of Oregon State University in a 15-7 major decision.
Stewart landed two takedowns but fell short in the final round, and will move to the third place matches.
He is one of two Cal Poly Wrestlers to secure his starting spot on the Mustangs’ tournament roster during wrestle-offs held at practice earlier this week, a rare strategy that the Mustangs opted for after having four different wrestlers compete at the weight over the season.
No. 4 seed 197-pounder Cole Jackson, the other wrestle-off winner, will take the mat later on.
Luka Wick lands pin to move on to 165 pound title match

Midway through the second period, Cal Poly No. 3 seed 165-pounder Luka Wick ignited the crowd, landing a pin for a fall victory over Oregon State No. 2 seed Kekana Fouret.
After the pin, Wick turned to the his coaches with his arms outstretched in celebration.
Back in their Feb. 7 dual Wick fell to Fouret in their in a 4-1 overtime loss, and took this as his chance for redemption.
“I’ve been thinking about that match ever since the moment I lost,” Wick said after the victory.
With the win Cal Poly wrestlers move to 3-3 on the day, and will have at least three title matches later this eventing.
Chance Lamer, Legend Lamer fall in semifinal matches

At 149 pounds, No. 9 redshirt junior Chance Lamer lost to No. 11 Jordan Williams in a surprise 10-4 decision upset.
Moments later, No. 33 Legend Lamer fell to Oregon State’s No. 26 CJ Hamblin in a 7-3 decision.
It was the first of the Mustangs’s ranked wrestlers to go down, as Zeth Romney and Koda Holeman moved on to the final round at their respective weights earlier in the event.
Both Lamers will have a shot at redemption in the third place matches held before the finals.
Daschle, the third Lamer brother, will take the mat later on in the 184 pound bout.
In between Chance and Romney’s matches, 141-pounder Corbin Shepherd lost his bout with Oregon State’s Nash Singleton.
Romney wins by major decision at 133 pounds to advance to final

Minutes after Holeman’s victory, No. 9 Zeth Romney was similarly untouchable at 133 pounds, winning 15-7 against Oregon State University’s Damion Elliot.
The redshirt sophomore will face a familiar opponent in the title round later on Thursday, against Little Rock’s No. 6 133-pounder Nasir Bailey.
The two have shared the mat twice this season, going 1-1, and will have their tiebreaker on the main stage with a conference title on the line.
Holeman starts championships with decisive win

No. 30 redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman got the Pac-12 championships off to a fast start at 125 pounds, dominating his match all the way through for a 16-2 major decision win over Little Rock’s Jayden Carson.
He came into the day’s events as the No. 1 seed, and will move on to face No. 13 Maximo Rentaria, who won his semifinal bout as well.
The two faced off earlier in the season at their Feb 7. dual, where Holeman won in a 4-1 decision.
A similar performance would give him the 125-pound title and a permanent spot in Cal Poly’s record books.
Six ranked Mustangs get ready to take on Pac-12 championships

Welcome to Mustang News’ live coverage at the Pac-12 Championships in Corvallis, Oregon. Of one full day of action, 10 Mustangs will fight for conference titles.
Six ranked Cal Poly wrestlers enter the championships, and a conference title or solid performance will send the Mustangs to the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia later this month.
No. 24 ranked 165-pounder and redshirt junior Luka Wick is the highest ranked wrestler in his weight class coming into the tournament and has a strong case for the conference title.
Ranked No. 9 at 133 pounds, junior Zeth Romney has already found success in individual tournaments this year. Romney won the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, beating out Iowa State’s No. 3 ranked Evan Frost in the final. Romney’s head-to-head record against No. 6 ranked conference rival Nasir Bailey is 1-1 across their two matchups.
No. 9 149-pound redshirt junior Chance Lamer has a tough path to a title as the second seed for 149 pounds, where three of four wrestlers rank in the top 11 at the weight.
Ranked No. 30 at 125 pounds, sophomore Koda Holeman opened the match against the Beavers with an overtime victory against No. 13 Maximo Renteria. Holeman will face off against Renteria in the 125 pound championship if both wrestlers win their first round matchups.
No. 20 at 285 pounds, redshirt junior Trevor Tinker performed well against Oregon State and Little Rock, and is on a 10-bout win streak entering the championships.
No. 33 at 157 pounds, graduate Legend Lamer is the No.2 seed in his weight class, and will fight for the single NCAA qualifying spot at 157 pounds.
