Cal Poly Women’s Tennis hosted Santa Clara on Saturday, March 15 in a rescheduled match and CSU Northridge on CSU Northridge and swept both of them.

The Mustangs (12-3, 3-1 Big West) extended their winning streak against the Broncos (6-8) and Matadors (6-7, 0-3 Big West) and are winners of nine of their last 10 matches this season.

Saturday versus Santa Clara

Saturday’s matchup versus the Santa Clara Broncos was overwhelmingly in the Mustang’s favor, but this match meant more than a record.

Cal Poly was honoring Team IMPACT member and hometown hero, 9-year-old Brooklyn Fritz, on Nephrotic Syndrome Awareness Day.

Brooklyn was included in the pre-match celebration with photos and gifts from both Santa Clara and Cal Poly, the Mustangs wore special uniforms to spread awareness for the rare kidney disease.

With Brooklyn watching on, Cal Poly would roll over Santa Clara 7-0.

The Mustangs No. 1-2 doubles punch took care of business early, giving Cal Poly the 1-0 doubles point. Senior Peyton Dunkle and redshirt sophomore Amy Leather took the dual in 6-4 fashion on court No. 1.

Court No. 2 would see the same 6-4 outcome, with junior Kennedy Buntrock and senior Romane Mosse cruising to victory. Cal Poly’s double dominance was a precedent of more to come, all six singles lines downed Santa Clara in straight sets.

Starting off the afternoon quickly, we look at lines No. 1, 5, 6.,

Anchoring the Mustangs at line No. 1 would be Buntrock, and she rocked her opponent 6-1, 6-0. With extreme efficiency at line No. 6, it would be sophomore Natalie Lynch in complete control over her opponent rolling to a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Freshman Jessica MacCallum would follow in their footsteps at line No. 5 with her own 6-2, 6-1 demolition and clinching the win for the Mustangs. Reaching her tenth win on the season, junior Sasha Ozerets got the job done on court No. 4 she downed her foe 6-3, 6-2.

Mosse and Dunkle would be the final two Mustangs on the court, fighting on lines No. 2-3. Mosse would finish before her fellow captain on court No. 3 after a decisive 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Dunkle at court No. 2 would put the finishing touches on Santa Clara beating her opponent, in a tight 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 win for the Mustangs and Brooklyn.

Sunday vs. CSU Northridge

Fresh off a 7-0 sweep over Santa Clara the day before, the Mustangs were feeling fresh and hungry for more.

In their first Big West home match of the year, Cal Poly took down the CSU Northridge Matadors in an overwhelming 7-0 sweep. This is the Mustang’s sixth sweep of the season.

On court No. 2 the dominant duo of Buntrock and Mosse are currently riding a three-match win streak. The pairing took down their Northridge foes 6-4, evening the overall doubles score 1-1 on the afternoon improving their record to 8-3 this season.

Court No. 1 would decide the opening doubles point. Dunkle and Leather would be the vehicles to bring home the clinching victory for the Mustangs.

In a tight 6-4 win, they set the tone for the beatdown to come. The pairing is now 8-2 on the season and undefeated in Big West play.

Five of the six Mustang lines won in straight-set fashion in dominance of CSU Northridge in singles play.

Starting off with a loud “Match on Two Stangs”, Dunkle extended the Cal Poly lead to 2-0 after a strong 6-2, 6-1 showing on court No. 2 and is off to a 9-2 start to her season.

Following her would be Mosse on court No. 3, the fantastic Frenchie cruises to her 10th win of the year with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Looking over to line No. 6, sophomore Natalie Lynch also eclipsed the 10-win mark on the afternoon, downing her opponent 7-5, 6-3, clinching the overall victory for the Mustangs.

Cal Poly’s leader in singles wins with 12 on the year owns court No. 5, that’s freshman Jessica MacCallum.

The freshman has been unbelievable for the Mustangs going 12-3 this year, she extended the Mustang with a 6-2,6-4 victory on the afternoon.

Ozerets was next to up the score for Cal Poly, in a tight battle she ended up pulling away for a 7-5, 6-4 on court No. 4.

Ozerets improves to an 11-3 record this year second for the Mustangs team.

All the while, Buntock was in a heated battle on court No. 1.

The Las Vegas native took the first set 6-4 after a couple of solid breaks. But in the second set, her play slipped, and her opponent forced a second set tie-breaker and took it 7-6 (7-4).

With the match clinched in the Mustang’s favor, the two played a third-set super breaker to 10.

Momentum was leaning all Northridge’s way.

Buntrock would reclaim that momentum right back when she started off with a mini-break of her opponent going up 3-0 early.

Her game was elevated from start to finish, ratting off points from all angles of the court, she would win 10-0 in the breaker, to cap off a 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (10-0) victory pushing her to 8-4 on the year.

Next up, the Mustangs host No. 69-ranked Columbia on Friday, March 21 at noon at the Ronca Tennis Center.
