Illuminate returned to Cal Poly’s Performing Arts Center, drawing packed audiences for the university’s annual student-run dance showcase.
Organized by United Movement, the production brought together cultural clubs and dance organizations from across campus. Performers represented a wide range of traditions, including Hmong dance, Ballet Folklórico, Lion Dance, Hula, Ballroom, Salsa and contemporary styles. For many participants, the event offered a rare opportunity to share cultural heritage and creative expression on a large stage.
Behind the scenes, dozens of student leaders coordinated logistics, rehearsals and technical elements to bring the show to life. Months of preparation culminated in two performances filled with high energy both backstage and in the audience.
For dancers, Illuminate serves as more than a performance. Students say it creates space for representation, especially within cultural clubs where members may otherwise feel underrepresented on campus. The showcase also fosters collaboration between groups that may not regularly interact, building a broader sense of community within the arts.
As students from different majors and backgrounds take the stage together, Illuminate continues to highlight the diversity and creativity thriving at Cal Poly.
