A mobile eye clinic brought free vision care to San Luis Obispo residents during a two-day event at the Homeless Services Center on Prado Road.
The event was hosted by VSP Vision’s Eyes of Hope program in partnership with Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County, the SLO Noor Foundation and People’s Kitchen.
The mobile clinic functions as a fully equipped doctor’s office, allowing volunteer optometrists to perform eye exams directly onsite. Patients who required glasses were able to select frames and receive prescription lenses produced in the clinic’s mobile lab.
Organizers scheduled more than 100 patients for the event, with additional walk-ins receiving services as availability allowed.
The program began following Hurricane Katrina, when volunteer doctors and staff provided vision care to people who had lost their glasses and access to medical services. Since then, the initiative has expanded into a nationwide effort delivering free eye care to communities in need.
Volunteers and local partners said the event aims to provide essential healthcare access for individuals who may not otherwise have the resources to receive routine eye exams or corrective lenses.
