In a high-scoring battle at Baggett Stadium, Cal Poly Baseball secured an 11-8 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, March 8, closing the game with a defensive highlight from freshman shortstop Nate Castellon.
Castellon played a pivotal role in the Mustangs’ (8-6, 2-0 Big West) comeback win to take their second straight series, contributing both at the plate and in the field against the Titans (4-10, 0-2 Big West).
The true freshman reached base multiple times, driving in two crucial runs while also scoring in the decisive fourth inning. His patience at the plate and ability to capitalize on Fullerton’s defensive struggles helped turn the tide for Cal Poly.
Castellon’s ability to deliver in key moments, capped off by his game-ending catch, continues to be an asset for the Mustangs as they begin their push for the Big West crown.
Senior outfielder Zach Daudet also made his presence felt, going 4-for-4 and scoring twice. His aggressive baserunning helped set up key scoring opportunities, and his RBI double in the sixth provided a much-needed spark for the Mustangs’ offense.
The Mustangs trailed 6-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, but their offense responded with a six-run rally, aided by defensive miscues from Fullerton.
Castellon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in a run and keeping the pressure on the Titans’ pitching staff. Later in the inning, he came around to score on a three-run home run by junior catcher Jack Collins, giving Cal Poly a 7-6 lead.
Fullerton briefly reclaimed the lead in the fifth, but Cal Poly answered again. Castellon’s single in the seventh drove in an unearned run, while Daudet’s presence on the bases kept the Titans’ defense on edge. A late solo home run by senior outfielder Casey Murray in the eighth sealed the win.
On the defensive side, Castellon anchored the infield, helping the Mustangs avoid costly mistakes. But it was his final moment in the game that made the biggest impact.
With two outs in the ninth and a Fullerton runner on base, a deep drive threatened to keep the Titans alive—until Castellon tracked it down, making a leaping grab to end the game and secure the Mustangs’ win.
Daudet also contributed in the outfield, making a key catch in the seventh inning to prevent extra bases. Cal Poly finished the game without committing an error, while Fullerton’s five errors contributed to their downfall.
Sophomore lefty Chris Downs earned the win in relief, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits. Redshirt junior righty Tanner Sagouspe closed out the game, picking up his second save of the season.
Cal Poly improved to 7-5 with the win and will look to carry its momentum into the final game of the series, which is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Baggett Stadium.
