Former Cal Poly left-handed starter Jakob Wright was selected in the fourth round of the 2024 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.

The Paso Robles native is the first Mustang off the board in the draft after a breakout collegiate season.

In Wright’s redshirt freshman season, he only pitched in the second half of the 2023 season due to injury, pitching 18 2/3 innings over eight appearances while striking out 30 batters and recording a 6.27 earned run average (ERA).

Wright took a big leap forward this past season as he pitched to the tune of a 2.97 ERA across, 15 starts and 88 total innings pitched while striking out 101 batters.

That stat line was good enough to earn him 2024 All-Big West First-Team honors along with teammates freshman third baseman Alejandro Garza and senior center fielder Jake Steels.

Wright showcased his slider as his best pitch throughout this past season and was rated a 65 on the 20-to-80 scouting scale coming into the draft, one of the best single-pitch ratings among all 2024 prospects.

Wright joins a Dodgers farm system that is ranked in the top 10 in the MLB and has recently produced young arm talent such as Dustin May, Walker Buehler, Tony Gonsolin and Bobby Miller.
