Cal Poly Football announced redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Dieffenbach will transfer in from the University of Pittsburgh on Monday.

The Mustangs finished the season with five different quarterbacks seeing playing time, with the move adding even more competition to the quarterback room.

Dieffenbach did not play during his two years at Pitt. Although the Panthers had injuries to their first and second-string quarterbacks last season, they decided to roll with a walk-on quarterback, David Lynch, over Dieffenbach.

According to 247sports, Dieffenbach entered the transfer portal on Friday, Dec. 13. He announced his commitment to the Mustangs on Dec. 27.

The 6-foot, 6-inch, 220-pound quarterback was a three-star recruit out of high school. He was listed 46th at the quarterback position in California and 108th overall, according to 247sports.

At Agoura Hills High School in California, he threw for 4,153 passing yards and 48 touchdowns through his three-year tenure.

Second-year head coach Paul Wulff started four different quarterbacks this season. The offense also had competitive games in which multiple quarterbacks played significant roles.

Redshirt sophomore Bo Kelly started the first few games this season, but redshirt junior Jaden Jones became the primary quarterback when the conference season started.

However, injuries to both allowed true sophomore Jackson Akins to make his first and second Division I starts. Akins was the starter when the Mustangs defeated Sacramento State, making his case to be a starter next season.

In the final game, Akins sat out to preserve his redshirt year. Richie Watts, who had played a secondary role this season as a flexible running option, started his first Division I game.

Announced on Dec. 5, Cal Poly football announced via Instagram that Paul Wulff’s son, Sam Wulff, will join the program next year as a freshman quarterback.

Whether the offense decides to run a multi-quarterback offense or stick with just one, the instability of this position will drive competition for the starting job next fall.
