Cal Poly Track and Field has gotten off to a hot start, breaking numerous records in their first two season meets.

The Mustangs competed at the UW Invitational from Jan. 31 through Feb. 1, where they broke six school records.

Redshirt senior Aidan McCarthy surpassed Davis Bove’s 2024 school record in the men’s 1,000 by over a second with a time of 2:19.68.

McCarthy was followed by senior Spencer Pickren, who finished a strong meet for the distance team by breaking his own record in the 3,000-meter by over five seconds with a time of 7:57.05.

Junior Rory Devaney broke his school record that he set last year in the men’s weight throw with a personal best toss of 69 feet, seven inches. The throw is over six feet over his former record and is good for the 23rd-best in the country this indoor season.

In his first time ever running in the men’s 600-meter dash, graduate student Chase Walter not only shattered the Mustangs’ school record but the Dempsey Indoor facility record, capturing first in the event with a time of 1:16.14. The time is the sixth best in the event in the country in 2025.

In his first meet as a Mustang, freshman Jeffrey Overgaard also broke the former record in the event with a time of 1:19.36, putting him as the second fastest in school history behind Walter.

Finally, junior MacGregor TeSelle broke his own school record in the 60-meter dash, capturing second in the event with a time of 6.74 seconds.

Two weeks later, the Mustangs visited Washington again to compete in the UW Invitational meet from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1 and broke another six records.

The meet was highlighted by McCarthy running a time of 1:46.55 in the men’s 800 to obliterate the former school record by over six seconds and finish second in the event. The time is currently the eighth-best in Division I this indoor season.

McCarthy now owns both the indoor and outdoor men’s 800 records for Cal Poly.

TeSelle continued his strong start to the season by breaking his own school record in the men’s 200-meter dash with a time of 21.09 seconds.

Devaney also continued his dominance by breaking the record he set in the men’s weight throw at the UW Preview just two weeks before, improving on his toss by almost two feet with a throw of 71 feet, 4.25 inches.

Sophomores Jordan Jackson and Alexander Franco both shined in the 400 on Saturday. Jackson obliterated a 21-year-old school record in the women’s 400 with a time of 55.12 seconds, while Franco followed up by breaking Joey Souto’s 2024 record in the men’s 400 with a time of 48.60.

In the last event of the meet, graduate student Corban Payne broke his own indoor school record in the men’s shot put with a throw of 55 feet, 11.25 inches.

After a year in which they broke many indoor and outdoor program records, Cal Poly Track and Field looks like they haven’t slowed down at all in the young season.
