Cal Poly Men’s Soccer suffered a 1-0 loss, their first in nine games, to UC San Diego at Triton Soccer Stadium on Wednesday.
The Mustangs (5-4-5, 2-1-2 Big West) outshot the Tritons (4-6-4, 3-2 Big West) 12-11 during the match, but with only two attempts on target, they remained scoreless for the second game straight.
Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune conceded his first goal in five games despite two saves in the evening.
Three-time Big West Defensive Player of the Week in 2024, McCune leads the Big West Conference in goals-against average and is also tied for most shutouts in the conference.
Freshman midfielder Quinn Mahoney had six shots, leading all players on Wednesday.
Mahoney leads all Cal Poly scorers this year but was stopped from adding to the total by Tritons goalkeeper Nolan Premack.
The defeat drops Cal Poly into third in the Big West, tied with Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Bakersfield at eight points.
UC San Diego slotted into second following the result, behind first-place UC Santa Barbara.
The Mustangs will break their third-place tie on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. at Cal State Fullerton in a crucial conference matchup.
Cal Poly dominated last year’s matchup against the Titans 5-0, and are looking to re-enter scoring form this weekend.
