Cal Poly Men’s Tennis kicked off their season with a 5-0 win at home over the Sacramento State Hornets at the Ronca Tennis Center on Saturday, Jan. 25th.

After a rain delay set the match back almost two hours, the Mustangs (1-0) swept the Hornets in all areas of competition at home in San Luis Obispo.

Sweeping the doubles point

In doubles, the duos of sophomores Raz Haviv and Sean Kamyshev and sophomore Sean Furgeson and junior Aaron Eliscu both won their doubles matches.

Haviv and Kamyshev finished 6-4, and Ferguson and Eliscu dominated on the doubles floor, comfortably winning in a 6-1 blowout.

Senior Bastiaan Weststrate and freshman John Cross did not finish their doubles match, but with two of the three matches ending in favor of the Mustangs, they could grab the match’s first point.

Continued domination in singles

The singles competition for Cal Poly was no struggle, as four of the six matches were in favor of Cal Poly, and the other two ended unfinished.

Westrate got away with a win at the number two spot, coming out on top 6-4, 6-3 in a two-set thriller.

Cross swiftly dominated the number four spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win. The number six spot was no trouble for freshman Jack McGary, who only allowed two games in the match, finishing 6-1, 6-1.

Haviv and sophomore Liam Toroman both had unfinished matches.

A strong performance from the Mustangs gives promising hope into their season as a young and hungry Cal Poly team looks to make a statement in the Big West this season.

They find themselves in Denver for their next and first away match of the season, against the University of Denver, on Friday, Jan. 31st.
