Cal Poly Men’s Tennis closed out their regular season this past weekend against Big West Conference rivals No. 49, UC Santa Barbara, and UC San Diego.

The Mustangs (9-9, 4-2 Big West) finished the Big West season in third place behind the first-place Gauchos (14-6, 6-0 Big West) and in front of the fifth-place Tritons (9-17, 2-4 Big West.)

Mustangs close out home schedule with a loss to the Gauchos on Senior Day

Men’s Tennis lost to Blue-Green rival No. 49 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, April 20 by a score of 4-1 at home.

The Mustangs had a chance to deny the Gauchos the outright Big West title and have a shot at grabbing a three-way share for it on Monday with a win.

The doubles point was tightly contested with freshmen Sean Kamyshev and Raz Haviv dropping their match 6-1.

The No. 90 ranked doubles pairing of junior Bastiaan Weststrate and redshirt senior Colter Smith picked up the win against the No.44 ranked doubles pairing 6-3.

Redshirt senior Joe Leather and senior Noah Berry went down to a tiebreaker in their match winning 7-6 (7-5) to win the doubles point for Cal Poly.

After that, it was all UC Santa Barbara; Berry lost to the No. 65 ranked player, with Weststrate, Kamyshev, and Haviv also losing to give the Gauchos the points needed to take the match and the Big West title.

Mustangs wrap up regular season on a high note

Men’s Tennis beat UC San Diego in La Jolla, CA on Monday, April 22, by a score of 4-2.

The Mustangs jetted down to the Tritons’ home court to make up for an earlier rainout.

The pairing of freshman Kamyshev and Haviv won their doubles match while Weststrate and Smith lost in their match. 

Leather and Berry battled with their opponents to the wire coming out victorious 7-6, to take the doubles point.

Leather beat his opponent in straight sets, winning both 6-4, while fellow redshirt senior Fernando Fonseca lost by the same mark.

Westrate and Kamyshev both won, giving Cal Poly the win, although Berry finished the match against his opponent, losing 7-5, 6-2, 7-6.

Cal Poly is the No. 3 seed in the Big West and will take on No. 6 seeded UC Riverside on Friday, April 26, in San Diego at 9 a.m.
