With Illuminate on the horizon, Cal Poly’s SLO Breakers are entering the final stretch of rehearsals.

The student breakdancing club has been refining its routine for the annual campus showcase, focusing on timing, transitions and precision. Practices have shifted from building choreography to polishing details, with dancers cleaning footwork and tightening freezes to ensure a sharp performance under the stage lights.

This year’s routine blends structured choreography with the improvisational roots of breaking. Club leaders say the balance reflects what makes the art form unique, freedom of expression within a shared musical framework.

Beyond the performance itself, members hope to challenge common misconceptions about breaking. While the style is often associated with street culture and competition, dancers emphasize its athleticism, creativity and individuality.

As Illuminate celebrates the diverse dance community at Cal Poly, SLO Breakers are preparing to put breaking front and center, aiming not only to impress the audience, but to inspire it.
