Cal Poly Track and Field continued its historical indoor season campaign, breaking more records across two different meets this past weekend. Just nine Mustangs competed between the two meets in Indiana and Massachusetts.

On Saturday, the men’s track and field program participated in its first men’s distance medley relay in program history.

The quartet of senior Carson Smith, sophomore Vincent Atilano, graduate student Aidan McCarthy and junior Chris Caudillo established a school record with a time of 9:25.05 to place eighth at the Alex Wilson Invite.

The time is currently the 15th fastest in the nation this season. In order to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Mustangs needed to crack into the top 12.

On Sunday, senior Tatiana Cornejo crushed a 39-year-old school record to place fifth in the women’s one-mile run at the Saucony Battle for Boston. With a time of 4:29.90, Cornejo beat the school record by 3.5 seconds held previously by Teena Colebrook since 1987.

Cornejo now holds program records for four events after recently shattering a 43-year-old school record in the women’s indoor 3,000-meter run on Feb. 13. Along with her new one-mile record, she holds both the women’s indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter school records.

Cal Poly will be back in action on March 13-14 when they will send their qualifiers to the NCAA Indoor Championships to wrap up the indoor season.
