Cal Poly announced the team will part ways with head men’s basketball coach John Smith after the 2023-2024 season.

Smith will continue to lead the team in the final three games of the season.

Smith, who is in his fifth season at the helm of the program, compiled 30 wins and 114 losses in his time at Cal Poly. This season, the Mustangs sport a 4-25 record and are in the midst of a 17-game losing streak following an 83-75 loss on the road to UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Feb. 29.

In the 2022-2023 year, the Mustangs set the program record with 19 consecutive losses but ended the season with a first-round win in the Big West Tournament against Long Beach State.

“Thanks to John for his leadership and commitment to our university,” Director of Athletics Don Oberhelman said in a news release. “We wish him the very best with what is next for him and his family.”

According to Cal Poly Athletics, a national search for a replacement is underway.

The Mustangs’ last home game of the season is against CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, March 2.
