Cal Poly Women’s Soccer wrapped up their challenging non-conference schedule on Sunday with a 5-1 road loss to TCU, dropping their third consecutive match.
The Mustangs (1-5-2) struggled to produce offensively against the Horned Frogs (5-2-1), a common trend as Cal Poly has struggled to score goals through the season’s first eight games.
Sunday marked the first time in program history that the women’s soccer team traveled to Fort Worth to face TCU.
The Horned Frogs dominated the possession battle throughout the game, accumulating 33 shots on goal compared to the Mustangs’ seven shots.
Junior forward Jessie Halladay was the lone goal scorer for the Mustangs, notching a penalty-kick goal in the 71st minute. It was Halladay’s first goal of the season and sixth of her Cal Poly career.
The penalty kick opportunity came after senior forward Emily Nedom was fouled in the box by the TCU goalkeeper.
In just her fourth career start, Mustangs redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Riley Wilkerson put up a strong effort with 10 saves, but it wasn’t enough to combat the sheer volume of attempts from the Horned Frogs offense.
Cal Poly came ahead in the foul totals, finishing with eight to TCU’s 10, a positive trend in an area that has challenged them so far this season.
The Mustangs will look to return to the win column in their first Big West Conference game of the season, a home matchup against Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at Mustang Memorial Field.
