Cal Poly Women’s Soccer earned their first Big West Conference win in a 2-0 road victory against UC Riverside.
After dropping four games in a row and scoring just one goal in their last two, the Mustangs (3-6-2, 1-1 Big West) bounced back last week with a flurry of second-half goals in a 5-1 routing of the University of Nevada.
They carried their momentum into their match against UC Riverside (2-9-0, 0-2-0 Big West), continuing to pile on the offense with 17 total shots.
Similarly to their match with Nevada, Cal Poly’s attack came alive in the second half.
Following a scoreless first period, the Mustangs found 14 second-half shots compared to the Highlanders’ zero.
The game was broken open in the 75th minute when junior midfielder Brennan Cole found graduate student Whitney Wiley on a lofted through ball that she buried into the left corner of the net.
Senior Kate Reedy added another goal, converting a penalty kick after a UC Riverside handball in the box to seal Cal Poy’s 2-0 victory.
With back-to-back wins, the Mustangs are peaking at the right time as conference play continues.
Cal Poly will gear up for another Big West match when they travel to Cal State Fullerton to take on the Titans on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m.
