Cal Poly Women’s Tennis dropped their second match of the weekend as they fell to No. 25 Arizona State on Sunday by a score of 4-0.
The Mustangs (4-3,1-0 Big West) took on the Sun Devils (6-3) at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, after losing in Phoenix to Grand Canyon University the day prior.
Both ASU and GCU qualified for the 2023 NCAA tournament, so the Mustangs got their fair share of competition in Arizona.
Although the women couldn’t grab the doubles point, the No. 1 pairing of fifth-year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle secured a 6-2 victory. The Dunkle sisters took on a duo that was 5-2 prior to Sunday.
With the victory, the Dunkles improved to 4-2 as partners this year.
The Sun Devils then won 6-2 at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, securing the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
As for singles, Arizona State’s No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6 all won straight-set victories, clinching the 4-0 lead and the dual victory.
Delanie, playing at the No. 1, and sophomore Alexandra Ozerets, playing at the No. 4, both faced nationally ranked opponents. Delanie played No. 77 Giulia Morlet and Ozerets played No. 97 Emilija Tverijonaite.
The No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 spots all went unfinished Sunday.
The Mustangs will look to rebound next weekend as they travel to Fresno to face BYU on Saturday, Feb. 24, and Fresno State on Sunday, Feb. 25.
