No. 51 Cal Poly Women’s Tennis extended their winning streak to six straight matches this past week with a 6-1 win over Hawai’i Pacific on Tuesday, March 25 and 5-2 win over No. 70 Hawai’i on Wednesday, March 26.
The Mustangs (15-3, 4-1 Big West) have matched their six-game win streak from earlier in the season as they dominated against the Sharks (6-9, 5-2 PacWest) and Rainbow Wahine (7-7, 5-3 Big West.)
Senior Peyton Dunkle also took home two singles wins, tying her with Sheila Lewis for the second-most dual singles victories in school history with 49 wins. She now sits just two shy of the all-time record.
Tuesday vs. Hawai’i Pacific
No. 51 Cal Poly dismantled Hawaii Pacific University, 6-1, getting their island road trip off to a dominant start on Tuesday.
The day began with doubles play, where the Mustangs immediately seized control. Senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock were nothing short of spectacular at the No. 2 spot, sweeping their opponents 6-1.
This win was their fifth consecutive victory together, bringing their season doubles record to an impressive 10-3.
Right behind them, the dynamic duo of sophomore Natalie Lynch and freshman Jessica MacCallum clinched the doubles point with a hard-fought 6-4 victory. Their chemistry was evident, pushing their season doubles record to 4-1 and proving that the team’s future is bright.
Senior Peyton Dunkle delivered a performance for the record books. Moving up to the No. 1 singles spot, she dominated her opponent 6-1, 6-1.
This win was a milestone that tied her with Melissa LaMette for third place on Cal Poly’s career dual singles victories list with 48 wins.
At the No. 4 spot, Lynch put on a tennis clinic, her 6-0, 6-1 victory was so one-sided it was nearly a double bagel. Lynch improved her season record to 11-4, continuing her streak of exceptional performances.
Junior Alexandra Ozerets stepped up at the No. 3 spot with a decisive 6-2, 6-3 victory that officially clinched the dual match for the Mustangs. This win was particularly sweet as it moved her into a tie for 10th place on Cal Poly’s career dual singles victories list with 41 wins.
The most emotional moment of the day belonged to redshirt sophomore Amy Leather.
After being sidelined for an entire year due to injury, Leather secured her first singles victory in of her Cal Poly career, 7-5, 6-2.
Junior Sarah MacCallum rounded out the singles victories 7-5, 6-1, improving her record to 4-1 and contributing to the team’s overwhelming success.
Ranked Big West showdown on Wednesday
Cal Poly carried their momentum from Tuesday into this Big West battle against No. 70 Hawaii on Wednesday, securing their third-ranked win of the season and pushing their record to an impressive 15-3.
This milestone marks the team’s most wins since finishing the 2022 season at 17-7 and represents one of the six most successful seasons in Division I history.
The win extended Cal Poly’s winning streak to six matches and improved their Big West record to 4-1, positioning them as a formidable force in collegiate tennis.
The Mustangs’ dominance began in doubles play, where the dynamic pairs continued their winning ways.
Lynch and Jessica MacCallum picked up a crucial 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot, extending their record to 5-1 and a four-match winning streak.
Right behind them, the duo of Mosse and Buntrock clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory, bringing their season record to an impressive 11-3.
After Hawaii evened the match at 1-1 with a win at the No. 1 spot, Lynch responded emphatically. Playing at No. 6, she secured a 6-2, 7-5 victory, improving her season record to 12-4 and maintaining her dominance in Big West play.
The match’s most dramatic moments unfolded as four singles matches went to a decisive third set. Ozerets stepped up with a critical three-set victory at No. 4, moving her season record to 13-4 and continuing her strong Big West performance.
Dunkle delivered perhaps the most significant win of the day.
After dropping the first set 2-6, she battled back to win 6-4 and 6-3, clinching the dual match for Cal Poly and tying for the second most dual singles wins in school history.
Jessica MacCallum added the final exclamation point with a hard-fought 6-1, 6-7 (0-7), 6-4 victory at No. 5. Her win marked her fifth straight victory and 14th in her last 15 matches, solidifying her place as one of the team’s most consistent performers.
The Mustangs will look to continue their Big West dominance when they return home to host UC San Diego on Friday, April 4, at 1 p.m. at the Ronca Tennis Center.
