There was a lot to love going around with Cal Poly Women’s Tennis on Sunday, Feb. 16, taking on San Jose State just two days after Valentine’s Day.

Cal Poly was coming off a close 4-3 loss to Fresno State, another Mountain West opponent, and looked to bounce back against San Jose State.

Coming off an undefeated 4-0 start, the Spartans (4-1) met their match in San Luis Obispo, experiencing a 4-0 sweep in front of the Mustang (4-2) fans at the Ronca Tennis Center.

With the win, the Green and Gold are now winners of three of their last four matches.

Starting the day strong, Cal Poly had some doubles dominance on Court No. 2 with redshirt sophomore Amy Leather and senior Peyton Dunkle.

In their debut match as a doubles pairing, they cruised to a 6-1 victory, giving the Mustangs an early advantage.

To clinch the doubles point for Cal Poly, the powerful No. 1 line of senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock bested their opponents in 6-3 fashion to take an early 1-0 team lead.

Dunkle followed her doubles performance with an emphatic double-bagel, 6-0,6-0, playing singles at line No. 2.

The senior, who has been battling some injuries early this year, looks like she is back on track and playing her best.

Not long after Peyton’s victory, court No. 3 was finishing up in a dominant performance.

Junior Sasha Ozerets would come out on top, 6-1, 6-1 at the third spot.

Ozerets is off to a hot start this season as she is now 4-1 on the year, primarily playing at lines No. 3-4.

The Mustangs hold a commanding 3-0 overall lead, feeling a win in the near future.

The clincher would come at the hands of the freshman Jessica MacCallum on court No. 5.

MacCallum also took her opponent down in straight sets, finishing off a 6-4, 6-3 win.

The freshman is off to a solid start in her collegiate career as well, and MacCallum has notched her fourth win this year.

With the match clinched, the Mustangs and Spartans decided to end the contests, and the remaining matches looked at third-set affairs to go unfished.

Cal Poly now improves to 4-2 on the season and will conclude their six-match homestand next weekend.

The Mustangs will play host yet again to the Gonzaga Bulldogs (5-2) on Friday, Feb. 21, at noon and the Grand Canyon Antelopes (3-4) on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m.
