Fueled by a dominant team performance in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Cal Poly Wrestling moved up to the number 22 ranked wrestling program in the country in the latest InterMat Tournament rankings.

It marks the fifth straight year the team has been ranked in the top 25.

The Mustangs have stood out from the Pac-12 competition under head coach Jon Sioredas’ guidance and were the only team not in a power conference to have a wrestler in one of the final matches of the Cliff Keen Invitational while finishing 13th.

Going into the weekend the program was unranked and jumped an unprecedented eight spots ahead of numerous teams in the ACC, Big Ten and Big 12.

The recent surge has been led by redshirt sophomore Zeth Romney, who won the 133-pound title at the Cliff Keen Invitational and moved up to fourth in his weight class.

Romney was named the Pac-12 wrestler of the week for the second time in the year following the performance.

The Mustangs now have six nationally ranked wrestlers, with No. 33 184-pound redshirt freshman Daschle Lamer joining the fray after being unranked in last weekend’s action.

His brother, redshirt junior Chance Lamer also moved up to the No. 7 149-pounder despite not competing in the invitational.

No. 28 Adam Kemp, No. 33 Luka Wick and No. 30 Trevor Tinker round out the nationally ranked squad, which will be looking to secure its spot in the NCAA tournament by the end of the season.

The Mustangs will have a lot of work to do before then, and that starts on December 19, when they will host home meets against Cal Baptist at 5:30 p.m. and Northwestern at 7 p.m. at Mott Athletics Center.
