A strong beat bounces off the walls as clothes pile up on your best friend’s bed – rejected outfits creating a mountain of sparkles and denim. The air is thick with hairspray and perfume, broken by bursts of laughter as you raid your best friend’s closet for the perfect top. The room vibrates with the kind of energy you only find when best friends are together, getting ready for a night out.

Let’s be real – while the clubs and bars promise unforgettable nights, the true highlight isn’t in those overpriced cocktails or crowded dance floors. It’s in these chaotic, intimate hours of preparation when you’re sprawled across your friend’s bed, trying on everything in her closet and belting out lyrics at full volume. I’m going to tell you exactly why these pre-party moments mean more than any night out ever could.

The best part is often the collective experience. Getting ready with friends creates a unique form of social-bonding. Precious moments of sharing clothes and makeup, swapping funny stories and deep secrets, and hyping each other up with genuine compliments build the kind of intimacy that research shows are vital for our mental and physical well-being. These seemingly simple interactions, from borrowing a favorite lipstick to confiding about a rough week while curling each other’s hair, foster the exact kind of quality friendships that psychologists have found crucial for reducing stress, improving life satisfaction, and even promoting longevity.

These vulnerable moments are often the ones we really remember when we look back. There’s something about sitting cross-legged on the bathroom floor, sharing your deepest fears while your friend curls your hair, that creates bonds stronger than any party ever could. In these private pre-party experiences you get to curate the perfect environment. There’s no awkward small talk with strangers, no unwanted attention from someone you’d rather avoid. It’s just your trusted inner circle creating a safe space for vulnerability and connection. You control who gets to be part of these intimate moments, which makes them all the more special.

When it comes to music, being in the sanctuary of your own home provides you with full control of the playlist without judgment. You aren’t subjected to listening to whatever is popular that week. You can bring out the sad country, then the 2000s hits or even the Alvin and the Chipmunks soundtrack. Passing the phone around and letting everyone queue their own songs makes for an interesting mashup, and helps everyone get into the dancing mood.

The room quickly transforms into a runway and a disaster. Clothes are flying, hitting ceiling fans and making piles on the floor. There is a bonding experience that comes with letting friends borrow your clothes. “This would look so good on you!” your friend shouts as everyone plays stylist for one another.

Somehow, what feels like 20 minutes of getting ready turns into two hours of life chats, impromptu dance sessions, and clothes mishaps that turn into inside jokes. These are the moments that turn into the stories you’ll still be laughing about years later.

Looking back, it’s never really about where you end up going. The real memories are made in these in-between moments – watching your friend perfect her signature dance move in the mirror, sharing that secret you’ve been holding onto all week or snapping candid photos as your friends play dress-up. These are the moments that make up the highlight reel of our friendships.

So maybe we’ve been thinking about parties all wrong. Maybe the best part isn’t the destination, but rather these precious hours of chaos and connection that come before. Because while the clubs will always be there, and the drinks will always be overpriced, there’s nothing quite like the magic of getting ready with your favorite people and creating the kind of memories that last long after the lipstick fades and the heels come off.
