Cal Poly geology students traveled to Carrizo Plain National Monument to study the 50-million-year-old rock formations in Powerline Canyon. Through hands-on fieldwork, they measured and described rock layers, using stratigraphy to piece together the region’s geological history. By analyzing particle size and bed thickness, students gained a deeper understanding of how the Central Coast landscape was shaped over millions of years—an experience that goes beyond textbooks and into the field.
