Following an incredible indoor season, redshirt junior Aidan McCarthy was named a First Team All-American on the track.
McCarthy competed in the NCAA Indoor Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Saturday, where he finished third in the men’s 800-meter with a time of 1:46.78.
With the finish, he became the first Cal Poly men’s track and field athlete to earn indoor First Team All-American honors in an event on the track and the third in Cal Poly history.
The achievement marks McCarthy’s second time being named a First Team All-American after becoming an outdoor All-American at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships. At that meet, he placed seventh in the 800-meter to become Cal Poly’s first Division I First Team All-American in the event.
McCarthy’s performance capped off a history-laden indoor season where he ran the fastest indoor 800 time by an American in collegiate history at the Last Chance National Qualifier on March 2. His time of 1:45.19 was the fastest in the NCAA this season, and the third fastest ever by a college athlete.
The Pleasanton, CA native also broke school records in the 1,000 and mile races over the indoor season.
With the indoor season wrapped up, McCarthy will now race outdoors, as the Mustangs compete at the Mark Conover Classic at Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex on Saturday, March 22.
