For the first time this year, Cal Poly men’s tennis won a match after losing the doubles point, beating Creighton 5-2 at home.

Lines No. 1 and No. 3 fell in doubles, giving Creighton (8-5) the early 1-0 advantage. Throughout the season, losing the doubles point has meant defeat for Cal Poly (5-8).

However, the Mustang players who competed in doubles against Creighton took their losses personally, going undefeated in their singles matches.

Four Mustangs won their singles match in dominant straight sets. The line No. 2 singles match went to three sets, but even that matchup showed Cal Poly’s command over Creighton.

Sophomore Sean Kamyshev lined up at line No. 2 for the first time this season due to senior Bastiaan Weststrate missing the match.

Kamyshev lost his first set 4-6, but came back to win 12 straight games and took the final two sets 6-0, 6-0.

That level of dominance also showed up in four other Cal Poly singles matches, with crucial straight-set wins at lines No. 1, 4, 5 and 6.

Junior Aaron Eliscu finished his line No. 5 match first, taking an efficient 6-2, 6-1 victory. He improved to 1-1 in singles this year, adding to a set of strong individual performances.

Eliscu’s doubles partner, sophomore Sean Ferguson, also took the victory in his second line No. 4 match of the year, 6-4, 6-4. With the win, Ferguson improved to 4-3 this season in singles.

Ferguson and Eliscu lost in a tiebreak in their line No. 3 doubles match earlier in the afternoon, but they bounced back with strong performances to put the Mustangs ahead going into the final singles matches.

Sophomore Raz Haviv followed suit, winning 6-4, 6-3 in a crucial line No. 1 matchup after dropping his doubles match.

Sophomore Wian Roothman rounded out the Cal Poly singles dominance, mirroring Haviv’s score with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

The Mustangs will stay at home for their next two matches. They face off against Boise State on Wednesday, March 19 before hosting Hawaii the following weekend at the Ronca Tennis Center.

Cal Poly is 3-5 all-time against Boise State. However, the Mustangs have been hard to beat at home this year, sitting at 4-2 at home.
