Cal Poly men’s tennis dropped their first conference matchup of the year 0-4 against UC San Diego on Sunday.
The Mustangs (4-8, 0-1 Big West) won their No. 2 doubles matchup, but did not take any other matches in the shutout. Freshmen starters John Cross and Jack McGary were unavailable for the afternoon match against the Tritons (4-5, 1-1 Big West).
The loss marks Cal Poly’s first defeat against UC San Diego, with the Mustangs maintaining a four-game win streak entering Sunday’s match.
Senior Bastiaan Weststrate paired with sophomore Wian Roothman at No. 2 doubles in Roothman’s first double appearance of the year.
The pair took their match 7-5, but Cal Poly losses at lines No. 1 and No. 3 gave the doubles point and match lead to UC San Diego.
The Tritons didn’t let go of that lead, and won three singles matches in straight sets to take an efficient shutout win.
Junior Aaron Eliscu was leading his match 6-3, 6-6 in his first line No. 5 singles match of the season when UC San Diego won.
Eliscu has mainly played at No. 3 doubles this year, going 5-6 with sophomore partner Sean Ferguson. Eliscu’s strong singles performance could see him filling the lower singles lines as the season progresses.
Sophomore Sean Kamyshev also held a 7-5, 2-4 advantage at line No. 3 when the match concluded.

The team has a week-long break before starting a three-match homestand on Tuesday, March 12 at noon against Creighton.
