After a rough first day at the Center of Effort Challenge, the No. 3 Cal Poly Mustangs (22-6) split their games against No. 7 Florida State and No. 1 TCU on Saturday, April 12, at the Swanson Beach Complex.

In the first match of the day against the No. 7 Florida State Seminoles, the Mustangs took care of business, getting their first win of the weekend, 4-1.

The Seminoles were looking for revenge from last season but were unable to get it. Last season, the Mustangs beat Florida State in the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals, ending Florida State’s season.

In that match, Cal Poly only dropped the No. 2 game. The No. 3 pairing for the Mustangs, Quinn Perry and Lindsey Sparks and the No. 4 pairing, Ella Connor and Madi Nichols, won their games in straight sets.

The No. 1 pairing of Piper Ferch and Erin Inskeep and the No. 5 pairing, Elise Lenahan and Katie Clevenger, won their games in three sets.

Perry and Sparks would also pick up a win in the second game of the day against the Horned Frogs but it was not enough to get the overall victory.

Lenahan and Clevenger and Nichols and Connor were also able to take their matches into a third set but came up just short, losing 15-11 and 15-8, respectively.

Cal Poly finished the weekend and the Center of Effort Challenge 1-3, as No. 2 UCLA defeated No. 5 Stanford in the championship match.

Cal Poly has one more regular-season event before the end of the season. Next weekend, they will head to Texas to play in the Lone Star Invitational.
