Sunday night success
The weekend’s culminating match against Grand Canyon (5-3) provided a different type of challenge. It was played under the recently installed lights at the Mustangs’ home, Ronca Tennis Center, and Comerford Pavilion.
The evening atmosphere added an extra element of drama to what would prove to be a fiercely contested battle.
Despite nervous energy during the opening doubles matches, Cal Poly’s partnerships rose to the occasion.
The undefeated duo of Leather and Dunkle continued their impressive run, improving to 3-0 on the season with a hard-fought 7-5 victory at No. 2.
The doubles point hung in the balance until Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock sealed it at No. 1, using aggressive net play and tactical serving to secure a crucial 7-5 win.
MacCallum, whose freshman campaign continues to impress, extended her personal win streak to six matches with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
Her record now stands at an impressive 6-2 in singles play.
Lynch, playing with growing confidence at No. 6, battled through a tense first-set tiebreaker before pulling away for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory, pushing her own win streak to five matches and improving to 5-1 on the season.
Dunkle, facing early adversity at No. 2, demonstrated remarkable mental toughness after dropping the first set 6-1.
The senior regrouped magnificently, adjusting her strategy to claim the second set 6-2 before securing the match-clinching victory with a gutsy 6-4 performance in the decisive third set.
Meanwhile, Mosse engaged in her own three-set thriller at No. 3.
After claiming the opening set 6-4, she faced a setback in a closely contested second-set tiebreaker, falling 6-7 (3-7). Mosse dominated the final set 6-2 to record her fifth win of the season and put an emphatic stamp on the team’s victory.
Looking ahead
After completing their successful homestand, the Mustangs face their first significant road test of the season.
They’ll travel north for two challenging matches, first facing undefeated No. 60 Sacramento State (7-0) before taking on UC Davis (5-7).
The upcoming matches will provide an opportunity for Cal Poly to solidify their position in the national rankings further and continue their momentum in what is shaping up to be a memorable season.
