After a week of dominant performances capped off with a career-high 30 points against Stanford, graduate forward Owen Koonce of Cal Poly men’s basketball earned College Insider’s Lou Henson National Player of the Week and Big West Player of the Week honors.
Koonce, a transfer from head coach Mike DeGeorge’s former school, Colorado Mesa, has put on a scoring clinic in the past week.
On Nov. 26, versus Grambling State, Koonce tied for the team lead with 17 points on 70% shooting, helping Cal Poly to an 82-79 victory that ended a two-game losing streak.
Just four days later, Koonce scored a career-high 30 points against Stanford. The forward was a threat from almost everywhere on the floor, knocking down three three-pointers multiple mid-range shots and getting to the basket at will.
The performance helped the Mustangs overcome a nine-point deficit and secure a 97-90 upset victory over Stanford, the program’s first-ever win over an ACC opponent.
Following this week, the Lafayette, Colorado native has become the Mustangs’ leading scorer, averaging 15.8 points per game.
As conference play begins for Cal Poly against UC Davis on Thursday, Dec. 5, Koonce’s surge could help them notch their third straight victory.
