Cal Poly softball scored just one run in their doubleheader matchup against Sacramento State, dropping to a 2-10 record on the season.

The Mustang offense went silent, losing the first game 8-1 and getting through only five innings in a 12-0 loss in the second game.

Only the top-three players in the batting order collected hits: freshman outfielder Maddy Bermudez, senior outfielder Kiara Blanchard and senior catcher Julia Barnett

Barnett’s single in the sixth inning of game one scored Blanchard, leading to the only run the Mustangs tallied on the day.

The Mustangs did not play well defensively either. The defense gave up five errors on the day, with four of them in game two. This led to only four of 12 runs by the Wildcats to be counted as earned runs.

The Mustangs now have 23 errors through 12 games this season. Head coach Jenny Condon said earlier in the season that the defense needs the most work going forward.

Seniors Paige Maier and Kate Judy took losses in the circle for Cal Poly.

The Mustangs have one more chance to win against the Wildcats Sunday morning at 11 a.m.

This upcoming weekend, the Mustangs will play in the Louisville Slugger Invitational to face Pitt, Omaha, Utah Tech and Loyola Marymount.

The Louis Slugger Invitational will mark their final matchups until the Big West conference season begins on March 8.
