Cal Poly Baseball’s Tanner Sagouspe took home Big West Pitcher of the Week honors for his three shoutout appearances in the past week against Loyola Marymount University and No. 1 ranked Texas A&M.
The redshirt junior righty tossed a total of 4 1/3 scoreless innings en route to his first weekly Big West award. He is also the seventh Mustang to win the award over the last 10 seasons.
Sagouspe most notably recorded the win in the Mustangs’ upset win over Texas A&M, pitching two innings in the effort.
During the season, Sagouspe had a 0.00 earned run average in four appearances and only allowed two base runners to reach.
Mustangs Make History
Cal Poly shocked the college baseball world when they took down No. 1 ranked Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon, handing the Aggies their first loss of the season.
A ninth-inning rally fueled by a two-run homer from catcher Jack Collins turned the game in the Mustangs’ favor, leaving Sagouspe to apply the finishing touches.
This win marks the third time that Cal Poly has slain a No. 1 ranked team in the Division 1 era.
In 2005, the Mustangs took down Cal State Fullerton at home and more recently defeated Vanderbilt in 2020 in Scottsdale, Ariz., making it the first time Cal Poly has beaten the top team in the country on the road.
Current Chicago White Sox pitcher and then Cal Poly freshman Drew Thorpe started in the 9-8 victory against Vanderbilt just over five years ago. Thorpe pitched seven innings, just as sophomore Ethan Marmie did in Sunday’s win.
This loss is the first to a non-conference regular season opponent for the Aggies since April 2023, when Sam Houston bested them.
Sunday’s upset serves as a huge momentum-shifter for the Mustangs, who would have fallen to 1-6 with a loss and dug themselves a deep hole to start the season.
Instead, Cal Poly now has secured the most impressive win for any team in college baseball this season and confidence is at an all-time high going into their first home series of the year against Seton Hall.
After the series finale, the Mustangs proved they can hang with the nation’s elite. This will be put to the test as the team progresses into conference play, as Big West foes UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara were both ranked last season and look strong to start this season once again.
The Mustangs will look to ride their high through the Seton Hall series, which kicks off on Friday, Feb 28, at Baggett Stadium.
