Trăm Phần Trăm brought traditional Vietnamese fan dance to the Illuminate stage, marking the group’s third appearance in Cal Poly’s annual student-run showcase.

The organization, whose name translates to “100% Vietnamese,” aims to celebrate Vietnamese culture through performance while building community on campus. Since its debut, the club has nearly doubled in size, reflecting steady growth and increased student interest.

This year’s performance featured three sections, including the group’s first long ribbon fan dance. The choreography blended visual storytelling with cultural symbolism, drawing inspiration from traditional movements that often reflect elements of nature, such as the lotus flower.

Members practiced weekly while balancing classes and involvement in other campus organizations. Coordinators and dancers said the preparation required collaboration, time management and commitment from a team made up largely of students participating in multiple dance groups.

Beyond choreography and props, members describe the heart of Trăm Phần Trăm as its welcoming community. The club encourages dancers of all experience levels and backgrounds to participate, using performance as a way to connect students with Vietnamese culture.
