San Luis Obispo is under tsunami advisory after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, according to the U.S. Tsunami Warning System’s maps.
Advisory is the second out of three tiers — watch, advisory and warning — designated by the U.S. Tsunami Warning System and cautions that strong currents and waves are dangerous to those in or near the ocean. Officials are advising the public to stay away from beaches and waterways.
If the tsunami comes, it will hit Morro Bay and Port San Luis at approximately 11:10 p.m. and reach Pismo Beach by 11:20 p.m. These estimates are when the first wave will hit, and the Warning System said tsunamis can be dangerous for hours after its arrival.
Much of the West Coast is under the tsunami advisory along with Alaska and Hawaii as of Tuesday at 9:26 p.m. Earlier Tuesday evening, the federal government flagged San Luis Obispo for tsunami watch and later increased to the current status.
