Cal Poly Track and Field once again returned to Washington for their final full team meet of the indoor season, participating in the Husky Classic on Friday, Feb. 9 and Saturday, Feb 10.

Day 1

The first day of competition featured multiple personal and school records being broken.

On the women’s side, sophomore Tatiana Cornejo set a new program record in the women’s indoor 5,000-meter with a time of 16:01.47. Cornejo’s time outdid her former record by almost 22 seconds.

Graduate student Shelby Daniele broke her own school record in the women’s indoor 200-meter for the second time this season with a time of 24.36. Her time was good for second in the event and the fastest a Mustang has performed in it since 2017.

Sophomore Chase Kubinski, freshman Melanie Castelli, and junior Lariel Henley performed well in the women’s high jump, placing third, fourth and fifth, respectively, all hitting the mark of 5-3. Kubinski’s leap was a new personal record.

Junior Melody Nwagwu set a new personal indoor record in the women’s long jump with a mark of 39 feet and 10.75 inches, placing fourth in the event.

On the men’s side, freshman Ben Kin Ho Tsang broke the school record that he set in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.31 seconds, good for fourth in the event. Junior Spencer Pickren placed 35th in the men’s 3,000-meter with a time of 8:07.93. His time ranks third in school history.

 Senior Joey Souto placed sixth in the men’s 200-meter with a time of 22.56. Sophomore Rory Devaney placed second in the shot put with a mark of 63-1. 

Day 2

Twenty-three Mustangs competed on day two, which featured many outstanding performances.

Senior Annie Hatzenbeler and sophomore Lexi Evans both jumped an indoor personal best of 13 feet, 0.25 inches in the women’s pole vault. The mark puts them at number four all time in program history.

Shelby Daniele continued her impressive weekend, placing fifth in the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 7.55 seconds. Melody Nwagwu and junior Maya Holman competed in the women’s high jump, placing third and fifth with respective jumps of 18-7.5 and 18-5.75.

Freshmen Jordan Jackson, Kalia Estes and Elianah DeMange, along with senior Anisa Rind placed third in the women’s 4×400 with a time of 3:52.48, the fifth-best indoors in program history.

On the men’s side, Junior Noah Bustos competed in the men’s 60-meter dash and long jump. In the 60, he set a personal record of 6.99 seconds, and in the long jump, he broke the indoor school record with a mark of 22-11.75.

Freshman Chris Caudillo set a personal record of 4:02.59 in the mile. Junior Corban Payne placed third in the shot put with a mark of 52-6.75.

The Husky Classic was the final full team meet of the indoor season for Cal Poly, however some Mustangs will return to Washington to compete in the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite on Feb. 23-24.
