The Boston Red Sox selected former Cal Poly right-handed pitcher Steven Brooks with the No. 327 overall pick in the eleventh round of the 2024 MLB Draft on Tuesday.
Brooks is the third former Mustang to be selected in this year’s draft after southpaw Jakob Wright was selected in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers and catcher Ryan Stafford was picked in the fifth round by the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.
The Elk Grove, Calif. native pitched a collegiate career-high 82 1/3 innings over 15 starts this past season while sporting a 5.14 earned run average (ERA) and striking out 72 batters.
His best start in 2024 came in Cal Poly’s second game of the season against Missouri which saw Brooks toss seven innings of two-run ball while only allowing three hits and striking out 12 Tigers.
His previous two seasons with the Mustangs saw the 6-foot-6 Saturday starter post an ERA of 5.33 across ten appearances in 2022 and 5.58 across 18 appearances during the 2023 season.
Brooks joins a Red Sox farm system that ranks No. 14 in the MLB and is weak at the pitcher position.
