Incumbent Jan Marx and Cal Poly professor Michael Boswell have received the most votes in the San Luis Obispo City Council election, according to the initial report

Marx, with 40% of the vote, and Boswell, with 34% of the vote will likely fill the two open council seats. 

Marx served on the council since 2020 and was previously SLO’s mayor from 2010 to 2016. She also served on the council 1998 to 2002 and 2008 to 2010.

Marx is an advocate for protecting San Luis Obispo’s open spaces and led the city’s first climate action plan. She also supports renter protection, affordable housing and practical solutions for homelessness. Marx is endorsed by SLO Mayor Erica Stewart, State Assembly Member Dawn Addis and the SLO Democratic Party.

Boswell is a city and regional planning professor at Cal Poly and focuses on how cities can reduce carbon emissions. He previously worked on the city’s first housing element

Boswell supports a vibrant and walkable downtown, improving city parks and affordable housing for all. Boswell is endorsed by Stewart, the SLO Democratic Party and The SLO Tribune.

John Drake, project manager and coordinator for the San Luis Obispo County Behavioral Health Department, received 16% of the vote; Felicia Lewis, SLO business owner, received 9%.
