Authorities are searching for men who assaulted a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity in an antisemitic hate crime on Saturday.
At approximately 9:50 p.m. on Feb. 28, a large white truck with “extensive aftermarket lighting” drove near the house of Cal Poly’s Jewish fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi. The men in the truck yelled antisemitic slurs at the residents of the Alpha Epsilon Pi house, according to the Timely Warning Crime Bulletin email sent to students by the University Police Department.
The suspects then parked the truck on Hathaway Avenue and entered the Alpha Epsilon Pi property through an unlocked gate. After a verbal altercation, one of the suspects punched a resident in the head. The suspects then fled and drove away.
Law enforcement is seeking assistance to identify the suspects described as four to five white males aged 20 to 25 wearing trucker hats, blue jeans and cowboy-style boots, according to the email.
In a campus-wide email Monday night, Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong said the incident was reported to Cal Poly Police on Monday, who encouraged the fraternity members to report it to the San Luis Obispo Police since it occurred off campus.
Armstrong also gave details of the report and condemned antisemitism in the email.
“Hateful acts that target members of our Jewish community are hurtful, disgusting and simply unacceptable,” Armstrong wrote. “Antisemitism and all forms of hate and discrimination run counter to the values at Cal Poly and have no place at our university.”
This story was updated to include information from Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong’s email and remove Alpha Epsilon Pi address for privacy concerns.
