A new jewelry retailer has joined downtown San Luis Obispo’s shopping scene, as Gorjana opened its doors Monday on Higuera Street.
The Laguna Beach-based brand debuted its first San Luis Obispo County location at 949 Higuera St., in a storefront previously occupied by Bluemercury, which closed abruptly earlier this year. According to reporting by the San Luis Obispo Tribune, the store marks the company’s latest expansion after years of national growth.

Store employees said the downtown location was a natural fit for the brand’s target audience.
“I would assume it’s because SLO has such a good mix of young and older people,” said Jordan Mendoza, a Gorjana stylist and communications junior at Cal Poly. “We have something for everything.”

Mendoza described the brand’s aesthetic as “laid-back elegance,” with an emphasis on subtle, versatile pieces rather than statement luxury items. She added that customer experience is centered on personalization, with shoppers encouraged to mix and match textures, colors and charms to create jewelry that reflects their individual style.
Early customer interest appears to align with that approach. Mendoza noted that shoppers have gravitated toward staple items such as the brand’s Parker necklace, a paper-clip style chain designed for layering, as well as their customizable charm pieces for necklaces or bracelets alike.
The store’s opening also drew attention from neighboring businesses. Mendoza said that nearby retailers welcomed the new addition on the morning of their opening, with some offering gestures of support to the Gorjana team.

Shoppers visiting the store on its first day cited its visual appeal and broad demographic reach.
“It appeals to different ages,” said Kelly Rietz, a customer who visited with her daughter after recognizing the brand name.
Founded in 2004 by Gorjana and Jasen Reidel, the brand has built a reputation around accessible luxury jewelry, offering pieces that range from fine 14k gold and diamond collections to more affordable items priced under $50, which makes it appealing to younger generations. The company first opened its retail storefront in 2016 and has since expanded to multiple locations across the U.S.
The new SLO store reflects the brand’s “relaxed yet refined California lifestyle,” according to a company news release cited by the Tribune, and aims to provide customers with everyday, wearable pieces that emphasize personal style.

The downtown location is situated near several established retailers, including Urbane Cafe, Free People Movement and SloFroyo. Higuera St. is a central corridor to SLO’s downtown scene, known for high foot traffic.
The store is expected to operate Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m to 6 p.m.
The addition of Gorjana continues a trend of national brands entering the downtown SLO scene, particularly in the downtown core, where retail turnover has opened many new doors for new businesses.
