Cal Poly Track and Field wrapped up another successful road trip this past weekend, competing at the Payton Jordan Invitational and Fresno State Invite. Over Friday and Saturday, the Mustangs recorded seven event wins, five top-10 marks in program history and a facility record in the men’s hammer throw.
Friday was highlighted by impressive performances in the hammer throw at the Fresno State Invite. Redshirt senior Travis Martin continued his record-setting season, this time with a Warmerdam Field facility record. Martin placed first with a mark of 70.68 meters and currently ranks No. 3 in the West Division and No. 4 in the nation.
On the women’s side, it was freshman Golda Demby who shattered her personal best by over two meters. With a throw of 57.39 meters, Demby moved to the No. 2 spot in school history in the event and currently ranks third in the Big West this season.
At Stanford, a pair of Mustangs both recorded top-10 marks in section one of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Redshirt senior Bryce Kueker improved his third-best mark in school history with a time of 8:36.07, while junior Dheeraj Gurusamy followed close behind to record the eighth-best mark in school history.
On Saturday, the wins started to pour out for the Mustangs in Fresno. The Cal Poly women dominated the field events with three individual victories. Both junior Taylor Hofland and senior Lexi Evans continued their hot streaks from the weekend prior, taking first place in women’s shot put and women’s pole vault, respectively. Redshirt junior Camrenne Genilla recorded the third win for the women with a throw of 46.31 meters in the javelin.
The men won three events of their own on the day. Sophomore Ben Feyrer helped the Mustangs sweep the pole vault event at the meet by taking first with a height of 5.18 meters.
In the men’s 400-meter, sophomore Vincent Atilano continued his stellar season with another win, and redshirt sophomore Ben Kin Ho Tsang won the men’s 400 hurdles.
Sophomore Ava Simos also continued to build off of last weekend’s meet in Santa Barbara by improving her lifetime best again in the women’s 100-meter. With a time of 11.67 seconds, Simos improved her No. 6 spot in school history to place third in the event.
Along with her individual top-10 mark, Simos helped the Mustangs record the third-fastest time in school history in the women’s 4×100-meter relay. Senior Desie Armstrong, sophomore Tayhlore Hoagland and redshirt senior Cadence Roy-Williams ran the other three legs to finish in third place.
The Mustangs only have one more meet at the Franson Last Chance Invite held this coming Friday and Saturday before heading to the Big West Track and Field Championships on May 15-16.
