Cal Poly Cross Country wrapped up its second meet of the season on Friday, led by fifth-year Tatiana Cornejo, who crushed her personal best to capture third place.
Ten women and seven men competed for the Mustangs in Chicago against a stacked field that included Northwestern, Virginia and Michigan.
Despite the high level of competition, Cornejo destroyed her 6k lifetime best by over 40 seconds, recording a time of 19:16.8 to take third. Cornejo’s impressive time also beat out her previous 6k personal best on the course by over a minute. The podium finish helped the women place 14th overall.
Junior Melisse Djomby Enyawe was next to cross the finish line for Cal Poly with a 6k personal best of her own (20:34.73) to place 73rd. Following right behind Djomby Enyawe was junior Nikki Bridges, who placed 78th.
Senior Dheeraj Gurusamy continued his momentum from last meet, taking 57th as the top-placing Mustang male. Right behind Gurusamy was sophomore Miles Cook, who finished in 60th place with a time of 23:40.71.Â
Both Gurusamy’s time of 23:39.2 and Cook’s time were good enough for 8k personal bests. The men placed 15th as a team.
The Mustangs will return to action next month to compete in a pair of meets as they close the regular season. Cal Poly will split the team between the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Friday, Oct. 16, and the Bronco Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 17.
