The Cal Poly Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams combined for 23 wins over the weekend, highlighted by an impressive 18 wins by the women at the Cal Poly Invitational and a solid opening-round performance by the men at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Westlake Village, Calif.

Mustangs Shine at Home Invitational

Hosting a fall tournament for the second time in school history, Cal Poly Women’s tennis finished its three-day Cal Poly Invitational on Sunday at Ronca Tennis Center. The Mustangs went 12-6 in singles and 6-3 in doubles against Fresno State, Gonzaga and St. Mary’s.

Junior Jessica MacCallum and freshman Kaia Celin Bostroem Joergensen led Cal Poly with perfect 3-0 singles records. MacCallum only dropped one set, and Joergensen won every match in straight sets.

Cal Poly opened Friday with four singles wins against Saint Mary’s. MacCallum beat Stella Remander 6-3 and 7-5 while Joergensen defeated Mahi Khore 7-6 (5) and 6-4. Sophomore Aspen Chung won 6-3 and 6-2 over Elif Gunal, and sophomore Olivia Mlouk earned a 6-1 and 6-2 victory over Sydney Wilson of the Gaels.

In doubles against Gonzaga, Chung and Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako gave the Mustangs a 6-4 win over Sia Cariov and Angelina Hug. The Mustangs swept their three doubles matches against Fresno State on Saturday. MacCallum and redshirt junior Natalie Lynch won 6-1, Chung and Jakupovic-Kljako prevailed 6-3 and Joergensen and Mlouk added a 6-3 victory.

MacCallum, Joergensen, Mlouk and Jakupovic-Kljako also won their singles matches against Gonzaga. MacCallum defeated Emily Robertson 6-2 and 6-1. Joergensen beat Maddy MacNeille 7-6 (5) and 6-4. Mlouk won 6-3 and 6-0 over Ella Nielsen. Jakupovic-Kljako outlasted Sydney Wilson, 7-6 (5), 3-6 and 7-5.

On Sunday, MacCallum, Lynch, Chung and Joergensen again earned singles wins, this time against Fresno State. MacCallum rallied past Andi Anderson 6-0, 2-6 and 6-2, while Lynch, Chung and Joergensen all won in straight sets. MacCallum/Lynch and Jakupovic-Kljako/Mlouk also captured doubles victories against Saint Mary’s.

Cal Poly travels to La Jolla this week for the Big West Fall Selection, hosted by UC San Diego at their Northview Tennis Courts and Muir Courts.

Cal Poly Men Take on Sherwood Cup

Cal Poly Men’s Tennis opened the Sherwood Collegiate Cup with a five-court win over a combined Pepperdine and Cal Lutheran entry before facing New Mexico in pool play and Cal in the Silver Draw semifinal.

The Mustangs started Friday hot, winning both doubles matches. Senior Raz Haviv and sophomore Leo Matthysen defeated Pepperdine’s Photos Photiades and Will Steinberg 4-1 while junior Jack Cross and fifth-year Ernst Gouws beat Cal Lutheran’s Louis Bocquet and Toki Adachi by the same score.

Haviv and the Mustangs carried their momentum into the singles matches, defeating Photiades 6-1 and 6-3. Gouws followed with a 6-2 and 6-0 win over Steinberg, and Matthysen earned a 7-6 (5) and 6-2 victory over Adachi. Cross did not complete his singles match because of an injury.

Later Friday evening, New Mexico defeated Cal Poly in pool play. Haviv took Dario Ciobotaru to a deciding match tiebreak, winning the second set 6-4 after a 6-4 opening-set loss before falling 10-6 in the third set. Gouws lost 6-4 and 6-2 to Alberto Perez, while Matthysen fell to Phil Bosin in a clean sweep.

With these performances, the Mustangs advanced to the Silver Draw semi-finals, where they took on Cal. Haviv and Matthysen fell 6-0 in doubles. Haviv, Gouws and Matthysen dropped their singles matches against the Golden Bears, knocking Cal Poly out of the tournament. Cal Poly will play in two weeks at the UCSB Classic.
