I don’t go to parties often. 

And if I do, you best believe I am leaving on my own terms. 

The art of the Irish goodbye has been instilled in me ever since I watched Michael Scott from NBC’s “The Office” leave Dunder Mifflin to start his new life with his fiancée Holly.

But my time with Mustang Media Group has felt a lot like a neverending party at the Dunder Mifflin office, filled with an array of whimsy and self-induced stress. The thought of leaving it all behind after only two years feels wrong. 

In the words of Jim Halpert from the sitcom, “Sometimes goodbyes are a b*tch,” and perhaps “We should just save the goodbyes for tomorrow, at lunch.” 

My transfer experience at Cal Poly began and will end with MMG. I remember feeling like an imposter at our first workshop for the student organization. As I reflect back, this feels quite the opposite now. 

I’ve been blessed with mentorship from faculty in the department, and the constant support from my editors and fellow reporters at MMG have all influenced my confidence as a journalist more than they will ever know. 

Like those in “The Office,” the members that make up this student organization as well as the people I got to meet through my reporting process were a cast of characters that never provided a dull moment to my experience working as a student journalist. 

But if I leave this place having saved my goodbyes for lunch tomorrow, just know that at lunch I’ll tell everyone at MMG just how much of a lifeline they all turned out to be.
