When social sciences sophomore Linda Qiu began her internship last year with online fashion blog Chictopia.com, she never imagined that she would appear in a national American Apparel clothing advertisement. The ad featuring Qiu is a testament to fashion going in a new direction: for the people, by the people.

Out of Dust: Local store is treasure trove of used books
Entering Phoenix Books in downtown San Luis Obispo is like walking into book heaven, where everything, right down to the smell that only good, old books have, is perfect. The two-story space is a collage of artifacts that lend the feeling of being inside an antique shop of sorts rather than just a bookstore.
Straight black and unadorned: local poet keeps it simple
Poet and editor of nationally known Solo Café magazine, Glenna Luschei was the featured reader last Friday night at the first annual Winter Celebration Reading. The evening was a showcase of local poets reading works from Luschei’s publication as well as poems by the Plein Air Poets of San Luis Obispo.
What would Chelsea do?
Me, age 12, speaking sternly to my best friend Carly: “Have you accepted Jesus into your heart?” Carly, now sporting a semi-confused expression instead of her usual jovial face: “Umm, no I don’t think so.” Me, extremely pretentiously: “Well you need to, or else you’re going to hell.
Hamas has some blame in recent conflict
Josh falsely asserts that protesting rockets fired into Israel “would have done no good” since the United States does not support Israel as it does the Palestinians. The U.S. has actually given millions in aid to the Palestinians. The U.S. and other organizations have legitimately refused to deal with Hamas ruled Gaza because Hamas will not agree to halt terror, recognize Israel and abide by past agreements.
Letter: It’s rĂ©sumĂ©, not resumĂ©
Marci Palla, you’re my favorite. I think it is a testament to the quality of our newspaper (and by extension our journalism department) that we can have a writer (who can’t spell) such as yourself writing a weekly column about words! For instance, most people would have (correctly) spelled last week’s word as “résumé,” but not you! Now, it may trouble you to know that Wikipedia and dictionary.
Proposition 8 opponents reconvene
Community members gathered at Congregation Beth David on Sunday to take a look at what they felt may have gone wrong in the No on 8 campaign that was waged last year against Proposition 8, whose passage in November banned same-sex marriage.
Marriage Equality USA chapter leader David Kilburn, whose organization helped with the event, said he wanted attendees to remember their emotions when the proposition passed in order to make change.

Folk Festival comes to Central Coast for the first time
A new festival is coming to town and it is safe to say that with 19 live concert events planned, there may just be a little folk for everyone. The Central Coast Folk Festival, presented by the Boutique Hotel Collection, will make its debut Jan. 15 to 18 at five locations around the county: The Cliffs Resort, Apple Farm Inn, The Inn at Morro Bay, SeaVenture Resort and Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort.
SLO Art Center features film nights
It is Saturday night and I am seated in the exhibition space at the San Luis Obispo Art Center awaiting the start to a film titled, “Splendid Splinters: The Armand LaMontagne Story.” The low hum of small talk dies down as attendees get adjusted, sipping glasses of wine provided by the Art Center.
Don’t use my tax dollars for weather predictions
I wrote about the global warming (AGW) debate last week, evoking the predictable feedback and flack, some of it apt and intriguing, some of it silly and sophomoric.
I daresay that it seems to ruffle the feathers of many when a lowly, non-scientist half-wit commoner hazards an opinion on this issue.
