Provost Durgin moved to new position

After just two years in the position, Bill Durgin, Cal Poly’s provost and vice president of academic affairs, has been moved from his position to a newly created executive-level role, Cal Poly officials announced yesterday afternoon.

Robert Koob, formerly Cal Poly’s senior vice president and vice president for academic affairs from 1990 to 1995, has been moved in to fill Durgin’s position on a maximum two-year interim basis.

Style your sole: Students buy shoes for a good cause

Communications sophomore Kelsey Fisher likes hers off-white with vibrant cyan and magenta swirls. Aerospace engineering senior Dominic Surano likes his olive-colored with black celestial ornaments and physics junior Andrew Shaw likes his plain.

Although this may sound like something from a new-age frozen yogurt shop, these students were actually decorating recently purchased shoes during Raise the Respect’s Style Your Sole, an event for TOMS shoes, which took place in the University Union from 11 a.

Cal Poly trails at Hartford

The Cal Poly men’s golf team finished the first round of the Hartford Invitational on Monday in 10th place out of 23 teams.

The Mustangs finished with a four-person total of 302 strokes at the 6,928-yard, par-72 Ballymeade Country Club in North Fallmouth, Mass.

Film raises funds for Obama

Was it the debates or the price of gas that kept people from coming to “Gas Hole” on Friday? Twelve people attended the film fundraiser at the Palm Theater on Friday night at 7p.m. Proceeds from the screening went to Obama Victory Fund.

Palm Theater General Manager Cameron Bowman said that the film was originally offered to both presidential campaigns.

Stopping at Cal Poly last night as part of his California university tour, Nader spoke passionately to a packed auditorium about the problems with America’s current two-party political system.

Nader speaks at Cal Poly

Hundreds of students and community members packed the Alex and Faye Spanos Theater and spilled out into the hallway behind it to hear presidential candidate Ralph Nader speak at Cal Poly on Sunday night.

Nader received a standing ovation from the crowd upon entering the stage.

Utah holds off hard-charging Mustangs

A barrage of second-half shots was in vain for the Cal Poly women’s soccer team in a 1-0 loss to Utah on Sunday. The Mustangs (5-6) outshot Utah 13-4 in the second half but were unable to score despite several close chances.

“We had the ball in their half (the whole second half); they were on their heels,” Cal Poly forward Ashley Vallis said.
