The question of if you prefer Coke to Pepsi is a heated one that can send some consumers into a religious-like devotion for one soft drink over the other.

Whether it’s the sugary sweetness or the fizz, on Tuesday Cal Poly answered the question: Coca-Cola.

After a long-term contract with Pepsi-Cola, Cal Poly announced in a press release that it would make the transition to a 10-year deal with Coca-Cola products come fall quarter.

Besides their namesake drinks, students, faculty and staff may now purchase a wide variety of Coca-Cola products, including: Coke, Dasani, Powerade, Galaceau, Odwalla, Fuze and Honest Tea according to the press release.

On the other side, this means Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Sierra Mist, Tropicana, Propel and Gatorade products will be difficult to come by. The only place non-Coke beverages will be sold at is campus market.

Coca-Cola vows to reduce energy costs by 35 percent. To do this they will install new Energy Star vending machines throughout campus.

In a Time Magazine article, it seems like President Obama would approve of Cal Poly’s decision as he is rumored to be a Coca-Cola devote.

This may be good news to some and bad news to others. So, do you prefer Coke products or Pepsi products? Or do you simply not care either way? Did the Cal Poly Corporation have any other options besides Pepsi and Coke, such as local company Guayaki?

  1. I prefer coke, but I’m unhappy with certain things about the switch. The article mentioned that coca cola was going to lower energy costs 30%? Well then why are the prices of soft drinks going up? Coca Cola bottles on campus are now $1.50 at vending machines, a rise from Pepsi’s price. I asked a backstage pizza worker, she said that they were raising the price 9 cents per cup there.

    1. Time to switch to water. Giving up soda pop was the best thing for my health this summer. I would recommend it to everyone!
