Matthew A. Weinstein will serve as Cal Poly’s next vice president of university development and alumni engagement starting March 1, according to a campus-wide email from President Jeffrey Armstrong Wednesday morning.
In his email, Armstrong explained how the position is essential in advancing key university priorities, including increasing graduation rates, expanding on-campus housing, diversifying the university community and recruiting top faculty.
“Matt has exactly the skills necessary to elevate our development efforts and help us strengthen our financial future,” Armstrong wrote in his email.
With over 25 years of experience in higher education development, Weinstein comes to Cal Poly from Carnegie Mellon University, where he served as associate vice president of development.
“On a professional level, I believe institutions like Cal Poly are more important than ever,” Weinstein told Mustang News. “They play a critical role in society, and I’m excited to raise funds to ensure that students can access this education while supporting our incredible faculty.”
Beyond his enthusiasm for Cal Poly, Weinstein said returning to California has a special meaning for him as well.
“On a personal level, I was born and raised in the East Bay and still have family there, so I am looking forward to returning to California and being closer to them,” he said.
Weinstein previously held leadership roles at the University of Pittsburgh, including senior executive director of advancement for the Swanson School of Engineering. His academic credentials include undergraduate studies at the London School of Economics and Clark University, as well as advanced degrees in political science from Lehigh University and the University of Pittsburgh.
Finally, Armstrong acknowledged Stacy Cannon for her service as interim vice president.
