Cal Poly Men’s Basketball notched their first regular season win with new head coach Mike DeGeorge at the helm against Division II Menlo College, 99-66, on Sunday at Mott Athletics Center.
The Mustangs (1-2) erupted for 59 points in the second half to bury the Oaks (0-1) and pull away for the victory. Graduate guard Jarred Hyder led the way in scoring, pouting in 19 points and adding six rebounds and five assists on the day.
Cal Poly’s attack was well-rounded in the victory, getting contributions from all over the court up and down the lineup. The offense scored 58 points in the paint, hit 10 three-pointers and added 11 points from the free-throw line.
The Mustangs’ second unit provided firepower off the bench, scoring 50 of the team’s 99 points.
Freshman guard Peter Bandelj set a career-high 15 points operating as Cal Poly’s sixth man.
Through the season’s first three games, the Cal Poly offense is averaging just over 83 points. Compared to the 2023-24 season, the Mustangs only averaged 66 points per game.
On the flip side, the defense allows 81 points per game, but with a potent offense, the Mustangs should stay competitive in every matchup.
DeGeorge looks to lead the Mustangs to another home victory as Cal Poly hosts the Seattle University RedHawks on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. at Mott Athletics Center.
